Belgocontrol and ULB join forces for Research and Development

Today Belgocontrol and the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) entered into a partnership for Research and Development. The Institut de Gestion de l’Environnement et de l’Aménagement du Territoire (abbreviated to IGEAT) of the ULB will focus on the cartographic representation and the advanced spatial analysis of air traffic.

In addition to its main mission -air traffic safety and management- Belgocontrol is also aware of its societal responsibility. Our company has been interested in the impact of air traffic on the environment for quite a few years now.

In the IGEAT Belgocontrol has found an ideal partner to collect and thoroughly analyse data. In collaboration with the Belgocontrol services involved, the IGEAT team will for example examine how online information can be put at disposal even better for the people living in the vicinity of Brussels Airport. The institute will also be studying the development of urbanism application tools and will be elaborating methods to analyse aircraft route deviations.

Johan Decuyper, Belgocontrol CEO: “This partnership means that Belgocontrol is yet another step closer to its objective of promoting research into its various fields of activity together with our Belgian universities. It are partnerships like these that enable us to have more extensive information that we can share with our stakeholders so as to continue to reconcile the interests of the aviation sector with the local residents’ quality of life. That way Belgocontrol fully plays its societal role.”

The past few years Belgocontrol concluded similar partnerships with the universities of Leuven (KUL) and Antwerp (UA).
