VIVES University of Applied Sciences and skeyes are launching a professional training program to become an air traffic controller

skeyes, Steenokkerzeel – 28 May 2025 - A scoop in Belgium: for the first time, Aviation students can work towards the position of air traffic controller, one of the most prestigious in the sector, via an academic route, starting next academic year at VIVES University of Applied Sciences.

In collaboration with Belgian air navigation service provider skeyes, VIVES University of Applied Sciences is launching a brand-new specialisation Air traffic Control within its bachelor's degree in Aviation. This historic step for aviation education in Flanders will be ratified on 4 June 2025 with the official signing of the cooperation agreement.

Flying start

Starting in September 2025, students within the bachelor’s degree in aviation can opt for the Air Traffic Control specialisation in their third year, provided they pass the mandatory aptitude tests. This unique course combines in-depth theoretical knowledge with intensive practical experience at EPNB training centre at the skeyes site in Steenokkerzeel — the nerve centre of Belgian air traffic control.

Response to growing demand

As air traffic increases, so does the need for well-trained air traffic controllers. With this innovative course, VIVES University of Applied Sciences responds to that need, offering students excellent career prospects, international opportunities and a future-oriented training.

Students undergo both air traffic controller’s basic and rating training and train in realistic simulation environments. They develop essential skills such as decision-making, communication and air traffic coordination. Mandatory mental aptitude tests, taken by skeyes, are also part of the programme.

Quote Nancy Vermeulen, Head of Aviation Training & Drone Applications at VIVES University of Applied Sciences:
“With this programme, we offer our students direct access to a challenging aviation career with promising future prospects.”

With this licence certificate, they can directly enter a shortened vocational training at an ANSP (like skeyes) - a direct route to a full air traffic controller qualification.

Quote Johan Decuyper, skeyes CEO:
“As an air traffic controller, you are an invisible yet indispensable link in the safety of thousands of passengers every day. In our state-of-the-art training facilities, VIVES students are immersed in the challenging and fascinating world of aviation."
